Nes Memories

Ahhh the NES. Such a great ass system. The NES itself was a little before my time in terms of when it came out as I was born in 86 but even so when I played it as a kid I did not look at it that way. Even with my brand new 2 day old Super Nintendo on standby, I still played nes as a kid. Maybe it was just something about the simplicity, or how the games really did take skill to beat. Hell, it took skill just to get the games working half the time. After blowing on the contacts for a half hour any game would seem good because of the extreme light headedness. lol

Don't get me wrong, I still think the snes is overall the best nintendo system ever. I flip flop between them but snes just did it better. Better system quality (snes systems could survive a nuke) better games, better everything. I enjoyed the Sega Genesis as well, but even as a kid I did not like it as much as the snes. It wasn't the graphical difference because I did not care about that crap as a kid (and still don't) it was just that I always seemed to get screwed over on sega game rentals/purchases WAY more than snes/nes games.

It's telling that even after all these years people still play the NES. Hell, even younger kids are playing and enjoying it. It is a testament to how good that console really is and the fact is we would not be playing games today without that console....crappy system design and all. (which is bs cuz the famicom is better built in my opinion.)

  1. Ah the nes that very first system that i ever had and played. i remember back when i was about 3 or 4 years old playing Super Mario Brothers/duck hunt on that system. Such an incredible system i didn't have very many games for it. The only other games i remember having for it where Teenage Mutant Ninja turtles 2 and Dragon Warrior. Dragon Warrior i could never get very far in. i got a Snes later and i loved that system to death, so many great memories from the Snes. My cousin had a Genesis so i have memories of that too but i prefer The Snes over the NES and Genesis.

  2. The only games I remember having are Kung Fu and Mike Tyson's Punchout. Kung Fu was very hard. I never got very far in that one. I think I did get to the end of Punchout, but I could never beat Mike.

  3. The NES was amazing but why did they have to make everything so fucking big compared to the Famicom? Not being a top loader makes it a fucking hassle to get the games working too and the NES-101 is fucking expensive.

The NES definitely had some of my favorite games of all time on it, even if they made me cry bitch tears. The Mega Man series, Ninja Gaiden, Super Mario Bros. 3, Zelda II, Adventure Island, Castlevania, etc. etc. There's just something so rewarding about beating a Nintendo Hard game, you feel like you actually accomplished something.

The NES also had a lot of basic games that were just simply fun, like Balloon Fight, Ice Climbers, that game I forgot the name of where you have to shoot bubbles as some kid. And probably my favorite "no skill involved, turn off your brain" puzzle game, Yoshi, which you can seemingly now play on any console/handheld device in existence.

The SNES had more amazing gems than the NES I think but the sheer library of the NES is so massive that I remember far more great NES games than SNES.

    1. ""were you have to shoot bubbles as some kid." Are you talking about Milon's Secret Castle by any chance?

    2. No, not that game. I remember it being multiplayer and you played as a kid who shoots bubbles with a slingshot.

  6. I was born in 1993 and had the privelage of growing up with some early Nintendo systems, but really, I guess because of the time I started to grow, I was always with Sony or enjoying PC games, some older PC games are still even today some of my favourites, Diablo, Unreal Tournament, Baldur's Gate etc. the same goes with games on the PS1, many beloved franchises.

However, an emulator is a beautiful thing, if you use it right and not to cheat and take advantage of save states. I played through Megaman 1 - 5 recently for the first time ever, beat them all in one sitting (one each day, inluding the first one) with no save states, no bullshit. Great ass games, need to get on the others soon enough.

    Older games > Newer games.

Of course there are rare exceptions.

  7. It was the first console I ever played. I was so young at the time that I mostly just watched my older brother play it. Here's our old list of games...

    1. Super Mario Bros./Duck Hunt(The only original copy that we still have. My sister was probably the best in the family.)

    2. Super Mario Bros. 3(We lost it after moving, so I didn't get to play it. My Kindergarten class had it though, along with Chip n' Dale: Rescue Rangers and TaleSpine... but I could never get a turn among my class mates! lol)

    3. MegaMan 3(My favorite of our old collection)

    4. RC Pro-Am(My sister was also the best at this.)

    5. Rocketeer(We used to love the Rocketeer film back in the day, but later found out that the game was just an inferior clone of Batman.)

    6. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles(Anything I say about this one has already been mentioned a million times.)

    7. Castlevania 2: Simon's Quest(I don't give a flying rat's ass what AVGN and Egoraptor think about this game. Back when I was 3 or 4, this used to scared the fuck out of me. Nowadays though, it's one of my favorites on the NES along with the other 2 CVs.)

    8. Power Blade(Yet another one of those criminally underrated games out there.)

    9. Gotcha!(A Paint Ball simulator, and a terrible Light Gun game.)

    10. StarTropics(This game blew my mind because it actually had a story to it.)

    11. Sesame Street: Countdown(My mom got this for me when I was in Pre-School.)

So there you go. I may be leaving out something, but that was pretty much our whole NES in a nutshell. I later bought my own copies of Super Mario Bros. 3, Dig Dug II, and Bomberman. I also recently bought a new copy of StarTropics, Gargoyles Quest 2: The Demon Darkness, Little Nemo: The Dream Master, Castlevania 3: Dracula's Curse, and Shatterhand because they are all just too damn good not to have!

  8. I think the amazing thing about the NES is that it still holds up today. Even some of the games today follow the NES format. I think people still are in love with the older gaming consoles and some developers realize that and that's why we get awesome NES style games. (ex Mega Man 9 and 10/Bionic Commando Rearmed)
